It's been a while since I last participated in a Me-Made-Mittwoch (Mittwoch is German for Wednesday), but I think this outfit is worthy for a return.

Es ist schon eine Weile her, dass ich bei einem Me-Made-Mittwoch mitgemacht habe, aber ich glaube dieses Outfit ist für eine Rückkehr würdig.

Hat, Blouse, Pants and yes, Shoes are all made by me.

Ich habe Hut, Bluse, Hosen und ja, auch die Schuhe selber gemacht.

Voilá, heute kann ich wieder ein neues Stück präsentieren für den Me-Made-Mittwoch. Diesen wunderbaren Double-Face Stoff hatte ich schon lange bei mir und wusste nicht so recht, was ich daraus machen kann, damit der Wende-Aspekt so richtig Sinn macht. Bis ich endlich drauf kam, dass es ein ganz simpler Schnitt sein muss. Das Schnittmuster habe ich dann abgekupfert von meinem absolut liebsten Sommer-Teil, welches aus ganz leichter, weisser Baumwolle ist - ich trage es gerne über ärmellose Shirts und überhaupt über alles und täglich. Nun habe ich meine Herbst Version gemacht, habe ein paar Optimierungen am Schnitt vorgenommen und es zum Wende-Teil gemacht, was das weisse Original natürlich nicht war. Es gibt bestimmt 203 Arten, es zu tragen!

Voilá, today I can present a brand new piece again for Me-Made-Wednesday. I had bought this wonderful double-face fabric a while ago but didn't really know what to make out of it so that the double-face would really come into play. Finally I realized that it had to be a really simple pattern and took it off a summer garment I own. The original is made from a very light white cotton and I wear it over sleeveless tops and over basically everything and every day... So I made a Fall version of it, optimized the cut a little bit and made it reversible, which the white cotton piece wasn't. There must be at least 203 ways to wear this!

 

Alle Nähte sind Doppelnähte (französische Nähte), damit man das Teil wenden kann.

I used French seams on the whole garment, so that I can wear it on both sides.

A Traditional Chinese Pants Pattern!

This pattern really attracted me right away - not so much because of the final shape of the pants, but because of the simplicity of the pattern. It is put together from two rectangles and an elastic waist band. Nothing else! See here:

(Don't worry about figuring this out yet, I will explain it later in this post!)

Maybe you have already seen my circle jacket or the one I made out of a simple rectangle - yes, I am fascinated by turning simple geometric shapes into garments.

The final pant shape is similar to harem pants. I actually still haven't made up my mind about harem pants yet, and I haven't even made up my mind about these Chinese pants either. I consider the two versions I am showing you here muslins... wearable maybe, as pajamas and/or yoga pants, but I am curious whether I could turn this into elegant street pants... What do you think? Do they have potential? I'd love to hear your input!



 The pattern is put together from two identical rectangles like this one:

This rectangle will make up one pant leg and half of the crotch/hip part. Because it is so simple, the  measurements you decide on will be crucial. I wear a European 34/36 and I will tell you the measurements I used, along with the explanations how I came up with them.

This rectangle is actually made up of three parts (indicated by the vertical dashes). You could just use one piece of fabric, but the extra seams add interesting style lines. I did my first muslin with just one piece, so you see what that looks like in the pictures below.

Line A-C = 95 cm (37,5''), this is the total pant leg length from the waist band down.
Line A-F = 3 x 25 cm ( 10'') = 75 cm (30'') (They don't necessarily have to be equal though!)
Line A-G = A-B = 28 cm (11'')

No seam allowances included!

The distance from A-G (A-B) is how far you will overlap the two rectangles for the legs and it decides how low the crotch will drop!

The remaining length G-F is half the width of your hip opening, so unless you want to add a zipper, it has to be at least half of the measurement at the widest part of your hip.

Heute präsentiere ich mal etwas ganz Neues, den Rock habe ich gestern fertig gestellt! Kaum zu glauben, letzten Mittwoch war ich nicht dabei, aber vor zwei Wochen habe ich noch ein Sommerkleid angezogen. Nun ist es definitiv Herbst, und mein erstes Herbst-Stück tatsächlich schon genäht!

Today I am presenting a skirt I only just finished yesterday. It's hard to believe that two weeks ago I showed a summer skirt. I had to skip last week, and now it is definitely fall already. I am proud that I actually sewed a first fall piece already, right in time with the season!

Me-Made-Mittwoch #15

Heute trage ich das Kleid, das von mir den Namen "Miracle Dress" bekam. Nicht, weil es so wundervoll ist, sondern weil es wie ein Wunder war, dass es überhaupt tragbar herausgekommen ist...

Today I am wearing the dress that I call "miracle dress". Not because it is so miraculously beautiful, but because it seemed like a miracle that it turned out wearable at all...

Der Schnitt ist aus einer Deutschen Modenzeitung von 1941 und war mir eigentlich zwei Grössen zu gross, mindestens. Das war allerdings nicht die einzige Schwierigkeit -ich schneiderte das Kleid vor über einem Jahr, und dieser luftige Chiffon hat mich noch etwas überfordert. Das Kleid hat einen Seitenreissverschluss und die Raffinesse ist, dass es ein Unterhemd und den Unterrock gleich mit eingebaut hat. HIER sehr ihr mehr Fotos davon.

The pattern is from an old magazine from 1941 and was actually at least two sizes too big for me. This was not the only difficulty though - I sewed this dress over a year ago and this chiffon was a bit too challenging for me then. The dress has a side zipper and the really cool thing is that it has a top and underskirt sewn right into it. HERE you can see more pictures of the details.

Eigentlich ist es auch ein Wunder, dass es bei all den Änderungen die ich machte, am Schluss doch so ähnlich wie das Original aussieht. Was hält ihr von dem gelben Kleid? Ich glaube fast, das muss ich auch mal noch schneidern. Es ist sogar in meiner Grösse!

It's actually also a bit of a miracle that it ended up looking so much like the original after all the changes I made to it. What do you think of the yellow dress? I think I might have to give that one a try too - it even comes in my size!

Was ich heute trage (noch etwas müde und ungeschminkt...):

My outfit today (still a bit tired looking...):

Dieses Leinenkleid ist das wohl "erfolgreichste" Stück in meinem BurdaStyle studio. Ich habe es vor ca. einem Jahr nach einem Schnittmuster von 1935 geschneidert. Die Taschen habe ich dazu-gedichtet, den Ausschnitt etwas tiefer gesetzt, sonst blieb es ziemlich original.

I made this linen dress about a year ago from a pattern from 1935. It is probably the most "successful" garment in my BurdyStyle studio. I added the pockets and made the neckline a bit lower - other than that it is pretty much original. 

Ich habe übrigens auch die gestreifte Jacke genäht, sowie das dritte Kleid von links mit Jacke, alles zu finden in meinem BurdaStyle studio. Sicherlich werde ich es auch in Kürze beim Me-Made-Mittwoch vorstellen, jetzt passt es wieder zur Jahreszeit. (Den Mantel ganz rechts habe ich auch genäht, in einer Winter-Version mit Änderungen, HIER).

I also made the striped jacket and the third dress from the left with jacket. You can find it all in my BurdaStyle studio. I will surely soon present it at Me-Made-Mittwoch, now that the season is right... (I also made the coat on the right, in a winter version with some alterations, HERE).

Nun noch eine Vorankündigung: Ich habe dieses wunderbare Booklet erstanden - vermutlich aus den 1940'er Jahren! Nun lerne ich also, selber Schuhe herzustellen! Bereits habe ich mit geflochtenen Sohlen begonnen und werde vermutlich heute noch den ersten Post dazu schreiben.

A little Preview: I got this wonderful booklet - problably from the 1940's - about how to make your own shoes! I have already started braiding/sewing my first set of soles and will write a first post very soon, probably later today.

Das ist meine Mittwochs Kleidung heute:

Vielleicht langweilt Euch der rote Rock schon - ich habe ihn letzten Mittwoch schon gezeigt (aber  nicht getragen) und Euch auf das Tutorial dafür aufmerksam gemacht. Aber um den Rock geht es ja auch gar nicht, sondern um dieses Shirt:

You might be tired of this skirt already, as you might have seen it last Wednesday and in my tutorial already, but it's all about this shirt:

Ich habe es gerade eben fertig genäht und bin super glücklich damit. Ich nenne es das "süss wie seine Knöpfe-Shirt" (klingt VIEL besser auf Englisch). Es vereint viele meiner Lieblings-Details: Vintage Knöpfe, einen Peter Pan-Kragen, diese kleinen Ärmel, die auf Englisch Cap-Sleeves heissen und deren deutscher Name mir nicht einfällt (ich zähle auf Euch!), und Biesen. Ich habe es selber entworfen und das Schnittmuster hergestellt (*stolz*) und bin sogar mit meiner Ausführung zufrieden. Danke Euch allen für die ermutigenden Worte letzte Woche, die Overlock betreffend. Ich habe ein Buch bestellt und glaube bereits Fortschritte gemacht zu haben, obwohl ich bis jetzt erst das Inhaltsverzeichnis las :-). Hier noch eine Nahaufnahme:

I just finished it minutes before posting it here and I am actually really excited about it. I call it the "cute as its buttons shirt" (vintage buttons) and it features many of the little things I love: pleats, cap sleeves and a peter pan collar. 

I drafted it myself (*proud*), and I am even happy about my execution. Thank you all for your kind words about serging last week! I ordered a book about it and feel like I have made progress already, even though I have only read the table of contents so far :-). Here is a close up:

Natürlich werde ich Euch auch noch zeigen, wie es getragen aussieht. Dieses Top verdient einen separaten Post, denn es gehört auch zu meinem berühmt-berüchtigten 10-teiligen Herbst/Winter/Frühling Reiseset. Dort präsentiere ich es dann auch mit den Hosen, Shorts etc. Hoffentlich komme ich morgen schon dazu.

I will show you how it looks on me when I write the actual post about it. It deserves an extra post because it is also part of my 10 piece fall/winter/spring travel set. I should get around to it tomorrow, hopefully.

A new shirt for Me-Made-Mittwoch #11!

Juhui, nach zwei-wöchiger Abstinenz bin ich zurück beim MMM! Und zur Feier schreibe ich jetzt einmal versuchsweise einen zwei-sprachigen Post, da doch die meisten MMM-Besucher deutsch-sprachig sind... 

Übrigens trug ich tatsächlich trotzdem Selbstgeschneidertes an den letzten beiden Mittwochen, aber ich wäre nicht in Ruhe zum Fotografieren gekommen, und schon gar nicht zum Lesen der anderen Beiträge, darum liess ich es ganz bleiben.

Dafür kann ich Euch hier nun ein ganz neues Teil vorstellen, das gerade erst fertig geworden ist:

Yeah, I am back to the Me-Made-Mittwoch (Mittwoch is German for Wednesday) after a two-week pause! I actually still DID wear me-made things on the past Wednesdays, but I didn't get around to taking pictures or looking at everybody elses posts, so I figured there is no point in stressing about it.

But today I can present you a new piece which I just finished yesterday:

Das Besondere daran ist, dass man es mit Bändchen in den Seitennähten kürzer oder länger machen, und es so als Kleid oder T-Shirt tragen kann. Ich trage ganz gerne etwas engere Hosen mit einem langen Shirt drüber, das ist dann also diese halb-geraffte Version, die ich heute trage:

The special feature on this top is that you can make it longer or shorter with the strings on the side and either wear it as a shirt or as a dress. I like to wear tight pants with long shirts over it, so this is the "half-draped" version which I am wearing today:

Ich mag die Form der Neckholder-Shirts total gerne von vorne, aber von hinten machen sie meinen breiten Rücken noch breiter. Ausserdem stört mich nach einer Weile immer der Druck auf das Genick - darum habe ich mit einer Art Zwischenform experimentiert, die mich sehr überzeugt.
Nur leider, tja leider bin ich mit der Ausführung nicht ganz zufrieden.

I love the shape of neck-holder tops from the front, but from behind they make my  back look even wider than it already is. I also find that the pressure on my neck bothers me after a while. So I experimented with a "fake-neck-holder-shape" and came up with this, which I find quite convincing.

But unfortunately, I don't find my execution convincing at all...

Hier trage ich es in ganz kurz-geraffter Form, in Kombination mit meinem neuen Rock, zu dem ich übrigens letzte Woche ein ganzes Tutorial geschrieben habe - ihr könnt den Rock nachschneidern auf eure eigenen Masse... HIER. Über Feedback freue ich mich immer sehr!

So, nun also zum leidigen Thema "Ausführung". Ich hatte mir eine Overlock Maschine gegönnt, da ich sehr gerne auch mal ein schnelles Jersey-Teil nähen würde... Und darum kaufte ich auch eine Menge toller Jersey-Stoffe. Nun habe ich aber tatsächlich dieses ganze Kleid mit der normalen Maschine genäht, einfach weil ich gar nicht recht weiss, wie ich die Overlock benützen sollte! An diesem Kleid ist keine einzige Naht "normal" - da in die Seiten-Nahtzugaben Bänder eingezogen werden mussten, da die Träger gleichzeitig als Schrägband funktionnieren, und überhaupt, wie macht man mit der Overlock einen gewöhnlichen T-Shirt Saum?? Also darum habe ich jetzt ein Buch bestellt, und hoffe in naher Zukunft meine tolle Maschine auch einzusetzen zu lernen. Ich werde dieses Top garantiert noch einmal nähen, weil es mir vom Prinzip, von der Idee und von der Form her wirklich gut gefällt. Drückt mir die Daumen!

All right then, let us talk about execution... I have bought an overlock machine which I generally LOVE, because I want to be able to make quick jersey-projects every once in a while. I bought a bunch of great jersey fabrics recently, too.... and then I made this whole top using the normal machine! Ugh! Just because I actually don't know how to use the serger. There is no "normal" seam on this top, because I needed the seam-allowances in the side seams for the "tunnels" for the strings, the straps are also used as bias-tape and anyway - how do you make a simple t-shirt hem with a serger??

So I finally ordered a book about how to use overlock machines, and I really hope to find out more about how to use this fabulous machine soon. I will definitely sew this top again, because I love the idea, shape and principle of it. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Und so trage ich es dann am Strand, der Sommer ist ja schon da, jetzt muss nur noch der Urlaub kommen! Übrigens findet gerade bei der wunderbaren Casey die Diskussion über "Overlock - Freund oder Feind" statt... Und auch hier, Male Pattern Boldness attackierte das Problem vor Kurzem.

Me-Made-Mittwoch #10!

Here is one of my "Classics". The blouse and skirt are both from a travel set from 1953. You can read a little more about it HERE on this blog, or a little more about it in my BurdaStyle studio HERE. They are both made of fancy silk fabrics and a treat to wear. The pattern for the sunhat comes from the June 2009 issue of ANNA. As much as I have fallen in love with hats, I'm not sure I will wear it today. I like the shape, but not the fabric I used. It is too "country-side" for the city :-) I think I will make it again in about a dozen solid colors though.
I took the picture yesterday evening, and yes, of course I ironed the skirt today before putting it on...

Me-Made-Mittwoch #9!

First off, I want to apologize for not having answered, commented or even looked at any of the Wednesday outfits last week. What shall I say, busy schedule.... I am writing this on Tuesday evening since Wednesday will be busy again, but I hope I'll have some time later in the day to see the other participants creations.

This Wednesday, I am only wearing a single Me-Made garment: The Maddy top, based on the Celeste pattern. I made it a long time ago and don't really wear it very much - even though I think it is quite nice. The reason is probably that it is hard to combine with anything. I have posted three new garments on my blog this week, so I think wearing only one today is ok. :-)

As mentioned before, I am writing this on Tuesday evening and I even took the picture this evening when it was already getting dark -The pants are actually purple and match the stripes of the shirt really well. At least I won't have to worry about what to wear when I am still half-asleep in the morning. I will see then if I can actually wear those open shoes or not, as it has been a bit rainy lately.

And here is a back shot. Why do I always take back shots? Well, not only to show you the pieces of clothing from the back - but I seem to worry overly much about what I look like from the back and I like to check it before I hit the street... All too often you see women with great outfits, but then they turn around and you think: "Wow, I bet she has no idea how unflattering it looks from behind, or she'd have never put that on...".

Me-Made-Mittwoch #8!

Today with only a few words, because I'm in a morning-hurry...
A jacket from a 30's-pattern, more information about it here, and a me-made necklace.

Also, Cat asked us to show our fabric stashes. Until recently, this wouldn't have been possible for me - a big box was under the bed, one in the hallway, some in my guestroom etc. Now it is all in clear plastic boxes to the left and right of my guest bed:

 

In the hanging Ikea thingy I have some fabric rolled up that is already set for projects, along with notions in the drawers. It still all needs more organizing, but I am getting there.

Me-Made-Mittwoch #7!

This post is a little bit later in the day than usually, because I had to actually sew a little underskirt this morning to be able to present this knitted skirt... This is why I love me-made-Wednesdays. Not only do I have to find new combinations (I try to wear more than one me-made piece), but it makes me actually wear some of the things that have been lying in the closet...

I called the blouse the forgetful-seamstress' blouse in my BurdaStyle studio, (click the link for details) because if I had remembered how difficult whimsy fabrics are to sew, I would have never made this blouse...
I also admit that I would not knit this skirt again, it took FOREVER.
And another confession: I will probably wear those way-less-cool shoes that you see on the floor next to me when I go out for a meeting this afternoon. As much as I love them, I find the ones in the picture too "party"...

A little update: This combination didn't pass the MMM-fashion-police! :-) So maybe finding new combinations should be done with a little more thought... I have to smilingly admit - I felt much better after putting on a regular pair of jeans before leaving the house. But there is this saying: "Wer wagt, gewinnt" (roughly: "you can only win if you try") - maybe next time?

Me-Made-Mittwoch #6!

Last week I promised I'd be wearing a skirt today... Well, THINK before you make online-promises! This really would have been a pants day, with the chance of rain here in Vienna. But I am using the opportunity to introduce to you one of my early pieces again. It was my own idea, "design" and I had to figure out construction and everything on my own. I was not a very accomplished seamstress back then, which is annoying, because while I actually love the skirt, the execution is so poor, that I don't consider it really wearable any more... But since it's mostly a stay-at-home-day today, voilà!

It is made up of ties entirely, most of them old silk ties. I'll tell you more about it further down the post...

The little Bolero thingy is knit by me, too, of course. I think I found the pattern online, but I don't know where from the top of my head... If you REALLY, REALLY must know where I got it, I could spend some time to find it again. :-)

I recently took stock of all the things I have made so far, and I was surprised how much it is. So I decided to make my Me-Made-Mittwoch outfits as me-made as possible. Here you see three pieces combined - or maybe I should say two and a half...
The blouse I made a long time ago, it's surprising that I can still wear it, as it was my very first go at a real blouse with collar, collarstand and a button closure. It's the Burda pattern 7831, and it was one of my first things posted in my BurdaStyle studio.
The jacket is from a pattern from 1935, from the same magazine I took the pattern for this white coat I recently finished and blogged about. It was originally meant to go with my linen dress, posted here in the BurdaStyle studio...
The pants are not entirely me-made. They were skinny pants and I don't do skinny pants. I mean, they were labeled a 34 I believe (which is usually a size too small for me anyway), but man, they were beyond skinny. So as you see, I was very bold, removed the back pockets, cut both legs open in one straight line , set in a strip of darker fabric and put the pockets back on. Now I can wear them. I swear I look skinnier in them now than I did before, pressed into them like a sausage....

Me-Made-Mittwoch #4!

Here we go again, a Me-Made-Wednesday outfit. Ich spreche übrigens auch deutsch... :-)

I made these pants, it's a Burda pattern and I highly recommend it. I posted it here in my BurdaStyle studio. I made it fit my exact personal measurements with the help of the book "patternmaking for fashion design" (Joseph-Armstrong). I think the extra effort is really worth it - the fit is just most crucial for pants...

I also knitted the sweater a long time ago, from left-over wool. Perfect for April, not the T-shirt type of weather,  but not the sweater kind either...

Oh, by the way: The fabric on the floor is for a summer coat I am making, with Sherry's wonderful RTW-sew-a-long tutorial over at Pattern - Scissors - Cloth. It's lying on the floor, because I am finally starting to cut out the pattern pieces (I am a bit behind), and because the stripes matched my outfit so well :-)

Me-Made-Mittwoch #3!

Since weeks I say I'll re-organize my closet TOMORROW, which is why I just throw things in wildly. For the first time now, I actually couldn't find a skirt I was looking for. Which is why I ended up with a combination I wouldn't usually have tried. Somehow it works. Let's call it the refashioned menswear look. Or whatever.
For new English speaking visitors: Mittwoch means Wednesday. Every Wednesday, the participants wear self-made clothes. Here are the other outfits!
And here is Cat-und-Kascha who came up with this great idea.

The top is part of my 10 piece winter travel set, I called it a Shirt-T, because it is a long-sleeve T-Shirt with a refashioned mens shirt (collar and cuffs) blogged about here, and the skirt was originally a pencil skirt so tight at the hem that I couldn't board one of those old fashioned cable cars we still have here in Vienna. I used the small part of a tie as belt, and the wide part - well, you can see that yourself. :-)

Me-Made-Mittwoch #2!

Here it is again, Me-Made-Mittwoch! Mittwoch is German for Wednesday, and I love this idea. While it really is easier than doing a whole month at a time (as in Me-Made-May, Self-Stitched-September, in case you don't know what I'm talking about...), it does give me a good opportunity to incorporate my own stuff into my daily wardrobe. Eventually, I want this to be the case every single day of the year...
I made this blouse, it's a Burda pattern you can find out more about in my BurdaStyle studio. The blazer is from my 1953 travel set, blogged about HERE, and in my BurdaStyle studio HERE.
There is also the tiniest little me-made-detail on my shoe, which you can only see if I sit down. One of the buttons fell off and where are you going to find that exact one? Well, I put on a tiny crochet flower I once made with the tiniest crochet hook I own...
For styling enthusiasts - I am a real beginner myself... - the colour of your socks make a much bigger difference on your outfit than you might think! :-)
